The Virginia Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators (VAGARA) is a statewide, non-profit organization whose members are affiliated with state or local government and interested in the development and implementation of policies and standards which will ensure improvement in the in the preservation of historical records throughout the Commonwealth and provide leadership in the advance of techniques and technologies to manage the storage, maintainance retrieval, and disposal requirements of public service records. VAGARA is dedicated to the development of a better understanding of federal, state, and local laws which govern public records.
VAGARA members represent multi-dimensional interests throughout the Commonwealth and do justice to the archives and records management profession. Members of the association have served on the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) Standards Committees, Virginia State Historical Records Advisory Board, Virginia State Records Council, Mid Atlantic Archives Conference, National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators Standards Committees, national and local Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA) offices, and have participated in numerous conferences and seminars and workshops as trainers and facilitators.
Established in 1984, VAGARA serves as a vibrant link in promoting the value of archival and records management practices at state and local levels through exchange of professional information, providing forums for the introduction of new and exciting techniques, and keeping abreast of developments in modern technology and its impact on public service information requirements.
VAGARA is governed
by a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian, and
four at-large members who are elected for two-year terms by the association
membership. The News Letter Editor and the Web Master serve as ex-officio
members of the Executive
Board along with the immediate past president. Members of the Executive
Committee are appointed to sub- committees to plan and conduct conferences
and workshops,
award scholarships and professional accomplishment, and to promote membership
in the association. VAGARA's Executive Board operates under the guidance
of governing
documents consisting of its Constitution, By-Laws, and Standing
Rules.
